Product Summary
Wheelchairs are an important tool for many people across the United States. In fact, about 36 million people in the United States over the age of 15 use a wheelchair.

Because wheelchairs are used by so many people, it’s crucial to make sure they’re properly taken care of. Do you own a wheelchair? Here’s what you need to know about maintenance.

Tools You Will Need

Whether you’re planning to repair and take care of the wheelchair hand rims or the wheelchair brakes, you’re going to need some tools to do so. You can easily find the needed tools at a local hardware store to get your wheelchair hand rims back up and running properly. You’re going to need to pick up an adjustable wrench, a tire repair kit for the wheelchair tires and wheelchair inner tubes, a set of Allen wrenches, and flathead and Phillips head screwdrivers.

Basic Maintenance

Each week you should wipe down the frame of your wheelchair and the wheelchair hand rims with a damp, wet cloth. You may even choose to put a bit of car wax on the frame to keep it nice and sleek. Once a month you should check for loose nuts and bolts. If the nuts or bolts need to be replaced, you’re in luck because you already have the tools needed to fix the problem.

If your wheelchair is one that folds up when no one is using it, make sure you take the time every so often to make sure that it closes and opens with ease. Lubricate the folding joints at least once a year to keep them fresh and in good condition. Just be sure to never lubricate the ball bearings on your wheelchair because of their existing sealant. If you have problems with the ball bearings, speak with a wheelchair manufacturer to help point you in the right direction on someone who can help you.

Wheelchairs are an extremely important tool for many people. Without them, some people would have major issues going on with their daily lives. Don't forget to perform basic maintenance to ensure proper performance.
